A36 (Grade 50) versus A572 Gr 50 - Structural engineering

I selected ASTM A572 Grade 50 rods because of the tensile strength of 65 ksi, which meets my shear resistance requirements. The project is Design-Build, and the contractor is requesting the use of ASTM A36, Grade 50 rods, which I'm assuming are more readily available (thus cheaper).

A572 to A992 - Structural engineering general discussion

Nov 01, 2007 · Maybe Northridge, maybe just growing awareness from designers that steel can be a lot stronger than that number (36, 50, whatever) that they punch into their calculators, maybe both. One of the sources I found said that the modified A 572 Gr. 50 grew out of the practice of making steel that could be dually certified to A 36 and A 572, which ASTM A36 Steel - Practical MachinistMar 09, 2019 · However, the A36 does not guarantee the greater strength. A572 Grade 50 (and now A992) are very popular specifications for somewhat stronger material (minimum 50KSI yield strength instead of 36KSI). Many mills can dual-certify their product for both A36 and A572 Grade 50.

The ASTM for this material shown on the MTR is ASTM 529 grade 50, where as ASTM A572 Steel Beam - Excellent Weight-Strength RatioIts low content of alloy elements such as columbium & vanadium optimize the properties in strength and atmospheric corrosion. Owing to its high strength of 50,000 ksi yield strength, A572-50 steel I sections are increasingly replacing common carbon steel beam like A36 which should be thicker to satisfy the strength requirement.

Steel Material Types - Definitions

A36 = The most common used hot-rolled carbon constructional steel is A36. It is easy to weld and has a minimum yield strength of 36k psi. Used in multiple applications like bridges, buildings, marine applications, and other structures where welding is used. A572 Grade 50 = The most economical of the high-strength low alloy (HSLA) group. Steel Plate Comparisons Precision Grinding, Inc.A572-42 A572-50:A572 grade 50 steel plate is a high-strength, low-alloy plate, specified for bridges, higher strength structural duties, and light pressure vessel requirements. Recommended for riveted, bolted, or welded structures, such as Gussets and Bridge Plates, when intended for construction of bridges. At 50ksi, a higher strength steel than A36.

Welding metals of dissimilar strengths

Unfortunately, welding AR plate to softer or lower-strength steels (usually A36 or A572) brings with it the potential for cracking in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) of the AR plate. Here, you need to use a joint design such as a short, small fillet weld that can reduce heat input and overall residual stresses on the AR plate, and also find a a516 gr 70 steel plate vs a572 gr 50 - Steel Material SupplierApr 18, 2020 · In addition, ASTM A572 Grade 50 is famous for its increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion.
